The American naval vessel made famous in World War II, the "U.S.S. Indianapolis," was in fact a heavy cruiser. A member of the "Portland" class of heavy cruisers, the "Indianapolis" saw action in a number of battles before finally being torpedoed -- tragically, just days before Japan declared its intent to surrender to the Allies.
