yes Prime Minister Cook apparently offered to send troops upon Britain's declaration of war. Ties with the mother country were still very strong at the time and there was little of the anti- British ( or anti- US for that matter) sentiment that is so dominant today. However Brigadier- General Bridges did successfully achieve some measure of independence by pushing for the volunteer AIF to be separate from British divisions. Also two referendums were held on the conscription issue and both were defeated so no individuals could be considered to have been forced to participate either- social pressures not withstanding.
