South
Freed slaves lived in both the north and the south. Being a slave was a legal status, and by the same token, being free was also a legal status. Therefore, once a slave became free, he was free to live and work in the south. Many free blacks owned plantations and bought and sold slaves.

no
They were free in the Union (the north), but not in the Confederacy (the south), as they became seperate.
NO slaves are free in north not south. They WERE free in the North not in the south but in Canada they would be free from anyone in Amereica That is not accurate. There were indeed slaves in the North during and even after the Civil War. The Emancipation Proclamation" only freed slaves that were captured by the North during the war. This was done because the North had a growing problem of captured property (slaves). The South also had completely Black troops that fought the Northern soldiers. Slavery ended at the end of the same year as the end of the civil war. Lincoln never saw the end of slavery in our country. Canada also traded slaves! The first know slave was Olivier Le Jeune sold in 1629 and brought over in 1626. He dies in captivity. It was eventually outlawed in 1793 in Canada. Slavery today in Canada has taken a much different turn. The illegal Filipino trade is becoming an increasing issue in that country as well in the United States.
Slaves were treated poorly in the South, were it was legal. They were free in the north.
