It went both ways, however, the captive Soviets in Nazi-hands were ultimately liberated by the Red Army, whereas the Nazis in Soviet hands were never freed by the Third Reich. Most German prisoners in the hands of the Russians didn't return home to the Fatherland, but likewise, the Russians in Nazi death camps didn't fare too well either. The war between the Germans and Russians was the most brutal war in history, claiming in excess of 20 million Russians, and 8 million Germans, most of which died on the Ostfront (Eastern Front).
