No, but the Spanish didn't want to fight anyway. The war lasted only 6 months, like Desert Storm a hundred years later (which lasted only 100 hours), they did more surrendering than they did fighting!

You did not say which war (we have had several) but I cannot recall that the US was EVER prepared for a war that we got in to- we have had to play catch up a lot.

The US wasn't beat militarily. However, the limitations imposed on the scope of operations in Vietnam made it into a war of attrition, which the Vietnamese people were better prepared for than the US populace.
