The nation (country) of Vietnam didn't exist during the Vietnam War. Nor was any nation called "Vietnam" fighting the US. There was a country called North Vietnam that defeated the Republic of South Vietnam in 1975. The US was allied to the RVN (Republic of South Vietnam).
The US involved Vietnam War was NOT about imperialism. Imperialism means the acquiring of an empire...such as colonies. The US wanted to keep any nation free from "communism." South Vietnam was one of those countries.
The Cold War. The Cold War did not necessarily involve any direct attacks, however. It was mainly between America and Russia in the 60's and 70's. Russia wanted to spread communism, but America didn't. Eventually Russia tried to spread it in Vietnam. The North Vietnamese approved, the South didn't. China was already communist, so they pitched in to help North Vietnam and Russia.
No hydrogen bombs were dropped on Vietnam. No nuclear weapons of any kind were used in Vietnam.
In Vietnam, with action extended into Laos and Cambodia. It was know as the Vietnam War. But it turns out that this military activity was designated as "a police action" and the U.S. was not at war with any of the countries where America was fighting.
