Pretty much all tribes had powerful chiefs, depending upon how you define powerful. To the Indian, powerful would mean leadership and guidance. Nearly every tribe had this kind of chief. It is history that defines powerful now for us in terms of what chiefs we learn about. For example, we all know about Sitting Bull, Geronimo and Chief Joseph. Not many know about the thousands of other leaders such as Tecumseh and Uncas, yet their impact on their tribes and rightfully history is just as great as the well know chiefs.
There were historically many powerful confederacies formed by native American tribes. Examples are the Powhatan confederacy, the Blackfoot confederacy, the Iroquois confederacy and many more.

They conquered other tribes, expanding their empire. They formed a confederacy of tribes that banded together. They had a strong economic infrastructure.

Appointed in 1861, he was responsible for negotiating treaties with various Native American tribes during the American Civil War. His role was significant in the Confederacy's efforts to secure alliances with tribes in the southern and western territories.

In the 17th century all five Indian trides formed a union. A union is also called a confederacy. Their government was called The Great Peace Law. The Tuscarora people later joined the Graet Peace Law, so then there were five tribes in the confederacy. the onondaga, mohawk, oneida, seneca, and cayuga.
Most of the Native American tribes were allies or had friendly relations to the French, who were more interested in the fur trade then establishing large plantations and expelling local Indian tribes from their lands. One of the few tribes that sided with the British were the Iroquois Confederacy.
