He turned himself in to the Troop Commander who assigned him to the HQ Company. On the day after the landing he earned his Medal of Honor as the youngest Marine to win the Medal in WWII. He had turned 17 one week earlier. He was discharged without the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal on disability.
