The step pyramids were like practice pyramids. They were getting the engineering down and the "how to". I doubt that without them they would have been able to engineer the Great Pyramid.
Great pyramids of cholula also known as the tlachihualtepet
Pyramids and mastabas are alike in that they were both the final resting places for the royalty and nobility of ancient Egypt. Mastabas were the first step toward the development of pyramids. The first step pyramids were several mastabas stacked on top of each other. Each level was slightly smaller then the first.

they were step pyramids built out of stone
Step Pyramids have an opening or entrance gate just like regular pyramids.
Step pyramids are similar in shape to smooth pyramids. They are made by gradually inclined steps that taper in to reach the top center stone.
The GREAT pyramids are the most well known and famous pyramids in Egypt.
There are 2 different types of pyramids: the step pyramid, and the true pyramid.
The Pyramids at Giza are probably the best known.
There are various types of pyramids, including regular pyramids (with a regular polygon as the base and congruent isosceles triangles as the faces), right pyramids (with the apex directly above the center of the base), and oblique pyramids (where the apex is not directly above the center of the base). Pyramids can also be classified based on the shape of their base, such as square pyramids, triangular pyramids, pentagonal pyramids, etc.
