When the battle looked bleak for Ferguson, and he was unwilling to lose, he led a suicidal charge down the mountain, in which he and the majority of his troops were cut down by massive gunfire from the Patriots. After the charge, many of Ferguson's men attempted to surrender, but were shot down in cold blood by the Patriots, who were bitter over the treatment of South Carolina by the British. Ferguson's men suffered 157 killed, 163 wounded, and 633 captured, while Campbell's men suffered only 28 killed and 60 wounded.
