The average person lived off the land. Wants vs. needs took up their lives. Food, clothing, housing, transportation were on their minds every day. The sewing machine wasn't invented until the mid-1800's so all garments (called costumes at that point) were hand sewn. Only the weathy could afford good (softer) fabrics with brilliant colors whereas the commoners wore linen and cotton. As for food, if they farmed, they would have food. Bartering was common for goods and services.
