first he finished japans unification, and then he finished off their enemies in the 1600's. He also gave the Daimyos their land, to make sure the Daimyos stayed true to him he made a system called sankin-kotai.

Tokugawa Ieyasu established the Edo, or Tokugawa, Bakufu. This was the third Bakufu (Which is a type of military government led by a Shogun) in Japanese history.

Ieyasu is also known as being one of the three "Great Unifiers of Japan". The other two being Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

After Hideyoshi's death, Ieyasu positioned himself to become a dominant figure in Japan. He would eventually defeat forces led by Ishida Mitsunari at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600.

After defeating the final vestiges of Toyotomi loyalists at Osaka Castle in 1616, Ieyasu was the unquestioned new ruler of Japan.

The Tokugawa Shogunate (Bakufu) would reign until 1868 when it collapsed in what is known as the Meiji Restoration.
