During the American Civil War (1861-1865), disease killed far more soldiers than combat. Of the estimated 620,000 to 750,000 deaths, approximately two-thirds were due to illness, while only one-third resulted from battlefield injuries. Unsanitary conditions, poor hygiene, and inadequate medical care in camps contributed to the rapid spread of Infectious Diseases.
Some of the most common diseases that afflicted soldiers included:
Dysentery – Often caused by unsanitary water and poor camp hygiene, dysentery was a leading killer.
Typhoid Fever – Spread by contaminated food and water, this disease was prevalent in both Union and Confederate armies.
malaria – Mosquito-borne, especially common in the Southern states.
Pneumonia – Often developed from exposure to harsh weather and inadequate shelter.
Tuberculosis – Prevalent in crowded, poorly ventilated camps and prisons.
In addition to these, other diseases such as measles, smallpox, and mumps took a heavy toll. The lack of antibiotics and limited understanding of disease transmission made infections deadly, even from relatively minor wounds. Medical care was rudimentary, with amputation being a common treatment for battlefield injuries, which often led to secondary infections.
