I think you are referring to the commonly known Aztec Empire. However, they referred to themselves as the "mexica" (pronounced "meshika") people. Their capital city was Tenochtitlan, located on an "island" in the "Lago (Lake) Texcoco." They were conquered by the Spaniards, lead by Hernan Cortes, in 1521.
