James Cook made three significant voyages. His first journey departed in 1768, and he commanded the 'Endeavour' on an expedition to chart the transit of Venus. Cook went on to search for Terra Australis Incognita, the great continent which some believed to extend round the pole. During this voyage he became the first known European to sight the Eastern coast of Australia, in April 1770. On Cook's second journey which lasted from 1772-1775, he commanded the 'Resolution' and the 'Adventure' on an expedition to the South Pacific, disproving the rumour of a great southern continent, exploring the Antarctic Ocean, New Hebrides and New Caledonia. On his third journey, commencing in 1776, Cook visited and named the Sandwich Islands, now known as Hawaii, and unsuccessfully sought a northwest passage along the coast of North America. This was the journey on which he was killed by Hawaiian natives, on 14 February 1779.
Along with Thomas Jefferson, James Madison was a Democratic-Republican.

Lieutenant James Cook (he had not yet been promoted to captain) first reached Point Hicks on the southeast corner. He then travelled north along the eastern coast, coming in to shore at Botany Bay.
On his third journey, commencing in 1776, Captain Cook visited and named the Sandwich Islands, now known as Hawaii, and unsuccessfully sought a northwest passage along the coast of North America. On his way back to England, he stopped at Hawaii again. After a boat was stolen by natives, he and his crew had an altercation with the Hawaiians. On 14 February 1779, Cook was speared by Hawaiian natives.
Cape Tribulation in Australia was named by Captain James Cook in 1770 during his voyage along the eastern coast. He named it because it was here that his ship, the Endeavour, ran into trouble with the reefs, leading to a challenging situation for the crew. The name reflects the difficulties encountered during this part of the journey, as "tribulation" signifies hardship and struggle.
The Captain James Cook memorial was built in 1970 to commemorate the bicentenary of Cook's charting of the east coast of Australia.A couple of points to consider, however: James Cook was not yet a captain when he charted the east coast - he was still a Lieutenant. Secondly, he did not "discover" it, but he was the first known European to sail along the east coast.
Captain Meriwether Lewis studied astronomy and navigation to chart the journey of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. He was particularly focused on using celestial observations to determine the expedition's location and progress along the route. Lewis also had a background in natural history, which allowed him to document and collect samples of new plant and animal species discovered during the journey.
