One important date is Hangul Day, which is the celebration of the creation of Korean writing, called hangul. In early Korea, there was no writing system native to Korea. The only writing system was Chinese, but it did not work very well, and it was difficult to learn for commoners. Most people were illiterate because of this. The king during that time, King Sejong (1397-1450), decided that there needed to be a national writing system native to Korea. Him, along with several scholars, created hangul, which means great script. This new language consisted of characters that could be put together to make words. Hangul Day is held on October 9. It is called Chosongul Day in North Korea and is held on January 15.

North Korea

saw tremendous success at first, the South Koreans and Americans (who had been on a more or less a vacation in Japan since the end of WWII so they were out of shape and training) got pushed back to a small area at the southwestern tip of Korea named Pusan which was only about 10% of all Korea. This was in September 1950.

5) General MacArthur was put in charge of U.N. forces in Korea and planned to attack the North Koreans behind their lines at Inchon. This Amphibious landing was called Operation Chromite and was executed on Sept. 15, 1950. The North had intelligence telling them it was going to occur but they ignored it because they thought it was too risky and couldn't be pulled off. It was a huge success and the North Koreans were cut off from their border and trapped between MacArthur's forces and the forces around Pusan.

6)After the landing at Inchon, the North fled back across the 38th Parallel. Not thinking just pusing them back on their side of Korea was enough, MacArthur argued for an invasion of North Korea to stamp out communism their all together.

7) When U.N. forces moved into North Korea, fighting took place near the Chinese border, which made Chairman Mao nervous. Kim then asked for Chinese help.

8)By Nov 1950 Chinese and American/U.N. troops were engaging.

9) 1951, Chinese and North Korean troops had again moved back south across the 38th Parallel, but not as far as the previous year.

10) The sides basically fought to a stalemate, changing territory throughout 1950-July 1953 when a cease fire (not peace treaty) was agreed and the old lines were reestablished.
