Mae C. Jemison is an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut, known for being the first African American woman in space. Born on October 17, 1956, in Decatur, Alabama, she pursued a degree in chemical engineering at Stanford University and later earned a Doctor of Medicine from Cornell University. In 1992, she flew aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on mission STS-47, where she conducted experiments in material science and life sciences. After leaving NASA, Jemison founded the Jemison Group and has continued to advocate for science education and diversity in STEM fields.
