While it really takes a whole book to review the career of Magellan, in brief, most of his crew (including Magellan himself) died on his famous voyage circumnavigating the world, as a result of scurvy, starvation, and other ills resulting from the inadequate sailing technology of the time; in addition, Magellan helped to further European colonialism, which has had vast consequences (both good and ill) that reverberate throughout history. He is, however, generally remembered for his brilliant navigation, and forgiven for whatever bad things he did.
