There were not many 'dos' and 'don'ts' at the theatre in Rome. It also depended on the type of performance. Following the Greek model, serious tragedies and comedies used only male actors, even for female roles. The actors wore masks which represented the characters. Female actresses performed in more dubious performances which had a sexual content aimed at pleasing male audiences. With women, acting was perceived as being associated with prostitution as well. It is doubtful that there was an etiquette for the audiences of these shows.
