There are several facts that underlie the 1973 Chilean Coup. The first is that Salvadore Allende, was a democratically elected socialist, and died under dubious circumstances in direct cause of the military coupe. It is well known that the United States lent implicit support to military regimes across South and Central America whom were engaged in "Dirty Wars" and political disappearances against communists, academics, artists and other left-wing parties. The Chilean Coup happened against the backdrop and overall context of the Cold War.
