Shoshone cradleboards were unique in shape, although roughly similar to those of the Crow they were far more rounded at the top, wider and decorated in a unique Shoshone way.

Shoshone moccasins were decorated with distinctive colours of glass beads obtained in trade; green, yellow and mid blue were frequently used.

Shoshone warriors often used a distinctive hairstyle, where the long hair was brushed across at the front and the sides were plaited. They also often hung strips of white ermine fur from their hair (called fur "tippets").

The leadership of the Shoshone people under Washakie was unique, because he became effectively a dictator and "head chief", which most other native American tribes never had until they were appointed by the US government.

• Their language is part of the Numic branch of the Uto-Aztecan language family, very closely related to Comanche, Chemehuevi, Ute, Paiute and Gosiute and very distantly related to the Nahuatl language of the Aztecs.
• They call themselves Newe, meaning "the people". Lewis and Clark called them "Snakes".
• The origin and meaning of the term Shoshone or Shoshoni is unclear; one suggestion is the Lakota term susuni, possibly meaning "grass lodge people".
• Historically they were divided into branches known by the major food source they each relied upon: agaideka (Salmon Eaters), tukudeka (Mountain Sheep Eaters), kutsundeka (Buffalo Eaters) and so on. The buffalo eaters were later called by the non-native word Lemhi, by which they are now known - these were Sacagawea's people.
• Sacagawea's name is sometimes claimed to mean "boat pusher" in the Shoshone language but this is completely false - there is no Shoshone term that looks or sounds anything like that. Her name is a corrupted form of the Hidatsa term Tsakakawia (Bird Woman), because she was captured and named by the Hidatsas.
• The more easterly bands of Shoshone lived in small tipis and hunted buffalo, adopting many aspects of the Plains culture. The more westerly branches built wikiups of brushwood, grass and branches and were much more like the desert tribes of the south-west.
• Lewis and Clark described the Shoshone people as rather short, with broad faces and dark skin.
• In 1805 Shoshone women wore a very distinctive "tippet" or cape with a collar of otter fur and around 100 rolls of white ermine fur hanging from it, reaching to the waist.
