As a general rule they're just called siege towers but in the Middle Ages they were known as belfry. You are talking about the big rectangular towers on four wheels that you roll up to the city walls, right?
Tails were primarily worn in medieval times as a distraction to bugs, giving them something else to ride around on rather than the human wearing them. since it was also possible to remove the tail and wash it, it helped keep the wearer as bug free as possible with the times. the main insect they were worn for was fleas, i believe.
Generally pretty hard, unless he was a merchant of some success. More than likely a freeman was a tradesman in Leather, armor, etc. Constant work 6 days a week. Generally people didn't work Sunday. If he was a farmer, life was even harder.

A medievil manor is a hard one. From my experience they are normelly brown with golden hinges all around. The brick is normelly very old even for medievil times. The brick is that old that they are all crumbled and falling off. Hope i helped !
