John Cabot actually never reached the United States. He is credited with being the first European to set foot on the North American mainland (the Spanish had been exploring the Carribean and South America), in 1497. He landed somwhere in Northeast Canada, probably Labrador, and explored and mapped down the coast as far as Nova Scotia. There are today several buildings and monuments to him in the Northeast territories, also the Cabot trail, a scenic byway on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, which is well worth the drive.

By the way, John Cabot is what his English patrons called him, his real name was Giovanni Caboto, and he was an Italian from Gaeta.
