Grant had ordered Sherman to destroy the Army of Tennessee.
Sherman had not managed to achieve this, mainly because of his long and vulnerable supply-line.
So he decided to ignore the supply-line and conduct a campaign of punitive raids across Georgia, living off the land as he went.
It was highly successful - destroying the Southern economy and civilian morale, and bringing the Confederate troops closer to starvation.
My mom said they burned houses and people in them killing as much as every Pearson in rackdale and that was the end of the civil war
the Phoenix. atlanta was burned to the ground during shermans march to the sea. Atlanta has emerged as the new capital of the south.
I think 2100 union soldiers died/were wounded and roughly 1000 confederacy soldiers died/were wounder --summer =)
he stared in Atlanta and moved to Savannah.
The 3 most important battles are subject to debate. But I would personally say that Antietam, Gettysburg, and Shermans march to the sea through the South were some of the most significant
