The ancient Greeks linked and explained most of the elements and seasons to the gods. A good example is Demeter, goddess of the corn. The myth goes that her daughter was captured by Hades, God of the Underworld and she refused to let anything grow, so the gods made a deal between them that they have to share her daughter Persephone between them. They explain the seasons as this:

Summer - Demeter and her daughter are together so everything grows and is plentiful.

Autumn - Her daughter goes to the underworld so Demeter starts mourning and the plants strat to die.

Winter - She continues to mourn and all the plants stay dead, and the land gets cold.

Spring - Her daughter returns and Demeter rejoices and the plants spring into new life.
