pushed to its normal shall we say event horizon, controlled ( I assume you mean selective) breeding of Human Beings- fine for pets and farm animals- would inherently work against freedom. We have all heard tales of young people pushed into career fields they did not choose, and often having deep sided psychic scars- it happened to the ball player Jimmy Piersall. Imagine - and it is technically possible, for a woman to go to some clinic, have an embryo implanted- and it is not her biological child but it is guaranteed against defects, etc. Something of a Stepford Wifes syndrome- it would be nightmarish and destructive of freedom- and Love. Imagine forced ( marriage) between two people who may well be incompatible. not a bright idea- fine for animals, though- which after all have utility and food value.

Are there any captive breeding programs for the Tasmanian Devil?

Yes, there are many captive breeding programs to help save the Tasmanian devil. Scientists are breeding Tasmanian Devils in captivity to limit the spread of the Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD). This disease is a great threat to Tasmanian devils living in the wild, affecting some two-thirds of the population. The Australian Government now has initiatives and programs set up to preserve the species. Tasmanian devils are being housed in captive breeding programmes, which should prevent the extinction of the marsupial, but not necessarily in the wild. There is a nation-wide Captive Breeding Program (CBP) called the 'Insurance Population' which is managed by the Zoological and Aquariums Association (ZAA) in coordination with the Tasmanian Governments 'Save the Tasmanian Devil Program' (STTDP).

Additionally, there are concerns about the economic impacts of protecting endangered species, such as restrictions on land use for agriculture or development.

How have captive-breeding programs helped restore populations of endangered birds?

Captive breeding programs help in two main ways: First it allows breeders to maximize genetic diversity in the endangered population, and secondly allows for multiple clutches (more offspring) than would happen in the wild.About 25 years ago I had the honor of working with Dr. Kurt Benirschke in San Diego as a volunteer (for about a year). The staff under his direction had worked out a technique to determine the gender of birds (some are monomorphic) and were using it to help reestablish the California Condor. (see http://www.answers.com/california+condor%29. Another project was to monitor urine samples to determine optimal times for breeding. They were in a race against time to build up the numbers of endangered species.

Are animals in zoos born in captivity?

Many animals in zoos are born in captivity, particularly those in well-established institutions that focus on breeding programs for endangered species. However, some zoos still house animals that were captured from the wild. The balance between captive breeding and wild capture varies by zoo and species, with a growing emphasis on conservation and breeding for sustainability.
