In football it is called the home field advantage. Morale is boosted because you are playing in the midst of your own fans. There is a shortened supply line and the locals are generally friendly to your cause. The French aided them with a large navy and fought on US land which gave them a good reason to want to fight and protect their homes.

The UK had a very long supply line that was under continuous attack and locals that were generally antagonistic to their efforts. It is true that they were a professional Army, had the best Navy on the high seas, and were very good at what they did, but they were spread very thin, and at the final engagement at Yorktown they were faced with two to one odds. When fighting against the odds, Victory most often resides in the camp with the big Battalions.
