F. W. Woolworth was raised in a Christian household and identified with the Methodist faith. His upbringing in a religious environment influenced his values and business practices. However, he was known more for his entrepreneurial spirit and impact on retail than for his religious beliefs.
Harper Lee was raised as a Methodist, but she was known for maintaining privacy about her personal beliefs and religion. Throughout her life, she remained quite guarded about her spiritual views.
The book talks about it in chapter one, on page 4 in my copy. It says that he made a lot of money, which goes against the Methodist belief of not "putting on gold and costly apparel." He also bought slaves, which is against their beliefs.
