Famine can be caused by a number of factors. One is weather: drought (extreme heat and no rain) or flooding (monsoons, tsunamis, extreme rainfall over a prolonged period of time) can destroy crops or destroy the fields where they grow, and the result is that people are left with nothing to eat. Another is poor planning: in some countries, they do not rotate crops nor do they prepare for emergencies; thus, when one crop can no longer be grown, or when crops are destroyed by the previously mentioned weather extremes, there is no plan for what to do next. And finally, there is politics. Some countries have an artificially caused famine, when the government intentionally decides to starve a portion of its citizens to put down a rebellion or to punish people who were considered disloyal in some way.
