The Tagus River is the dividing line between the two distinct landscapes of the Republic of Portugal. The mountainous area to the north of the river is characterized by an interior of plateaus and river valleys. Rolling plainscharacterize the south, from the Tagus to the Mediterranean coastal beaches of the Algarve. The highest point in the Republic isn't found on the mainland. Instead, it's Mount Pico, which is an ancient volcano on Pico Island of the Azores. On mainland Portugal, the highest point is the shorter Serra da Estrela National Park. The Republic is a country of great natural beauty. In fact, there are 12 natural parks, nine natural reserves, five natural monuments, and seven protected landscapes. Particularly impressive is the amount of forest cover. For the country abounds in pine trees [Pinus pinaster and Pinus pinea]; Portuguese [Quercus faginea], holm [Quercus ilex] and cork [Quercus suber] oaks; eucalyptus [Eucalyptus globulus]; and chestnut [Castanea sativa].

Natural features may be changed into human features due to urbanization and development, where land is transformed to meet human needs such as housing or infrastructure. However, converting natural features into human features can have negative impacts on the environment, leading to loss of biodiversity, disruption of ecosystems, and increased pollution. It is important to consider the balance between human development and conservation of natural features.

What is the difference between human features and natural features?

Human features refer to characteristics or alterations made by people, such as buildings, roads, and cities, reflecting human activity and culture. In contrast, natural features are elements that occur in nature without human intervention, including mountains, rivers, forests, and valleys. While human features can significantly impact the environment, natural features exist independently of human influence. Together, they shape the landscape and ecosystems of the Earth.
