Roman art does not have much of an influence now. Roman architecture and sculpture were very influential until the early 20th century. The architecture and sculpture the Renaissance (15th and 16th centuries) were inspired by the Romans and the Greeks. So was Neoclassicism, which spanned from the 18th to the 19th century.

The Romans influenced European architecture, sculpture and paintings until the early 20th century. They influenced the architecture and sculpture of the Renaissance (14th-15th century) Baroque (17th-18th century) and Neoclassicism (18th-20th century, and is still sometimes used today). Palladian architecture was also based on Roman architecture. Many painting up to the early 20th century were based on themes of Roman mythology.

The Romans probably did not invent the simple (barrel) arch and the vaulted arch (adjacent arches which are assembled side by side) which has an even greater load bearing capacity suited to support large roofs). However they were the first to appreciate the potential of arches and the vaults and use them extensively. They became essential for the construction of large scale buildings, to support roofs and to build basements. They were also used to build gates and bridges. This use of the arch and the vaulted arch to build buildings (especially churches) and bridges continued in Europe and the Americas until the 19th century and are still sometimes used today.

The Romans perfected the dome. The dome of the Pantheon in Rome is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. The domes of the Hagias Sophia church in Istanbul (formerly Constantinople) are famous. During the Renaissance Brunelleschi and Michelangelo studied the dome of the Pantheon to build the domes of the cathedral of Florence and St Peter's in Rome respectively. Famous domes, such as those of the capitol in Washington, St Paul's in London and the Pantheon in Paris were modelled on Roman domes. Many modern domes are still modelled on the Roman ones.

The Romans adopted the cranes of the Greeks and greatly improved on them. They provided the model for European cranes until the inversion of mechanised cranes.

The art of the fresco is purely Roman. The playwrights, historians, poets, and biographers all contributed. The Romans developed the use of concrete, enabling domed structures and innovated the Tuscan and Composite style of pillars.
