There are several major regions that make up Portugal including Porto e Norte, Centro de Portugal, the Lisboa Region, Alentejo, Algarve, Azores and the Madeira Islands. Each have several destinations ranging from archaeological sites and castles to historical villages.

Among mainland Portugal's top attractions are its UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

1. The Alentejo Region [Região do Alentejo] in the south has one World Heritage Site: the historic center of Évora with its medieval walls and Roman temple.

2. The Central Region [Região Centro] has two World Heritage Sites: the Batalha Monastery [Mosteiro Santa Maria da Vitória]; and the Convent of the Order of Christ [Convento de Cristo].

3. The Lisbon Region [Região de Lisboa] has three World Heritage Sites: the Monastery of Santa Maria d'Alcobaça [Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Alcobaça]; the Monastery of the Hieronymites [Mosteiro dos Jerónimos] with the Tower of Belem [Torre de Belém]; and the town of Sintra with its 19th century architecture.
