Another name for the part of the country referred as the South is Dixie or Dixieland. During the American Civil War, Northerners referred to those who seceded from the Union as Confederates or Rebels. Confederate soldiers were called rebels, Graybacks (because of the color of their uniform), Grays, Johnny Reb, Johnny, or just plain reb. Confederate guerrillas were called bushwhackers.
