Doolittle's Raid took place in 1942 - a direct strike on Tokyo, the Japanese capital. It had a two-fold purpose: To show the Japanese they were not out of our reach by bomber, and to boost morale back home (it was one of the first blows against Japan after Pearl Harbor). The raid used B-25 Mitchell bombers launched from the deck of an aircraft carrier, which was very dangerous, but did succeed. The actual bombs were conventional 250 and 500 pound high explosive bombs.
