MEDC Flood - Boscastle Information · SW England, in Cornwall · Small village based at the mouth of a river · August 2004 Causes · 8 inches of rain, double monthly rainfall in 4 hours - rose levels by about 2m · Really localised rain - dropped directly into valley · Steep valley sides - quicker to the river · The bridge became filled with trees and mud so the water couldn't pass under the bridge - made it worse as it had to go over · 100 tonnes of water a second moving through the river Impacts · No-one died or had a major injury · Swept away cars, vans, houses etc. Estimated that 150 cars completely written off · Damage was in the millions of pounds · 150 people airlifted from rooftops by Coast guards and royal navy was called · Emergency services from all over Cornwall to provide aid · Villages were forced to rebuild (everywhere was covered in 2-3 feet of silt and mud), so businesses were drastically hit e.g. Wellington Hotel. It took 45 months to return to its original state · Some people needed counselling as they were emotionally affected · Brought the community together What's been done? · Trees were taken down as they were battering rams and clogged up the bridge · Town planning was introduced so that buildings like hospitals weren't next to river, and try to use a managed retreat to try and make less homes and businesses built next to river

Boscastle is a village and a fishing port North of Conwall. The name comes from Botreaux Castle which was in the possession of the Botreaux Family. Boscastle is world-famous for its floods.
because boscastle is in a valley and there was loads of rainwater and it just all pilled up and it caused a flood
The Boscastle floods occurred on August 16, 2004, and lasted for several hours before the floodwaters began to recede. Emergency services and local communities worked together to rescue those stranded and provide assistance in the aftermath of the floods.
