Confederate General Robert E. Lee's main theory of war was intensively focused on several major ideas. It emphasized the necessity of gaining and holding the strategic initiative. It involved the control of timing and directions of military operations. Lee always wanted to engage the enemy on a battle field of his own choosing, and using the idea of concentrating his forces on weaker Union armies and defeating their parts to complete detail. He wanted to destroy Union armies in this fashion.
