Today computers are used everywhere to do everything. If you look at something (e.g. car, appliance, television, telephone, camera, hard disk drive, USB mouse, USB hub, business, bank, space vehicle, elevator, machine tool, sewing machine, many toys, video game console, remote control, industry, powerplant, waste processing plant, heavy machinery) there is very likely at least one computer in it controlling the device's operation. Each of these computers is an embedded control computer.

In addition to this there are all the obvious computers that are used as computers directly (e.g. mainframe computers, desktop computers, laptop computers, netbook computers, tablet computers). Each of these computers is used in whatever way that the user of the computer finds most useful to their purposes and/or interests.

The locations and uses of computers are only limited by the size and cost of the computer, both of which have rapidly declined beginning with the invention of the silicon monolithic integrated circuit in 1959, opening up more and more possibilities for their use.
