(North Korea attacked South Korea)

The Korean War began in June of 1950 when Communist North Korea invaded South Korea. Days after the attack, the Security Council of the U.N. asked nations to provide help to South Korea. Sixteen nations, including the U.S., sent soldiers to Korea. Although the U.N. force drove the communists out of most of South Korea, it was not able to defeat them. Finally, after more than three years of fighting, the United Nations and North Korea agreed to a truce.
