The failure of the Fort Laramie Treaty largely stemmed from the U.S. government's inconsistent enforcement and the influx of settlers and miners into Native American territories, which violated the treaty's terms. Additionally, economic interests, such as the discovery of gold in the Black Hills, led to increased pressure on Native lands. The government's shifting policies and lack of respect for Native sovereignty further eroded trust and ultimately rendered the treaty ineffective.

Native americans lit fire in the wood to protect themselves from wild animals or make themselves warm.
The United States government supported this, in that they set up reservation for the Native Americans. They then bought the land from them and promised to protect them. The US government also wrote and signed many treaties to help the Native Americans. Sadly though this didnt last long. Because the settlers wanted the Native Americans land. This caused the Native Americans to fight back. They were fighting not only for their land, but for their resources. But mostly in order to keep their traditions. Thanks I hope that helps!

The government broke treaties pure and simple. They allowed settlers to cross the Black Hills and seek gold. The Sioux considered the Black Hills scared and the plains tribes were often attacked by troops. Read Black Elk Speaks about an attack he experienced. In 1861 the Dakota Sioux were rounded up by the military after an attack on a settlers family. They took over 2,000 men, women, and children to Ft. Laramie. The government was going to hang 300 Dakota Sioux men, but Lincoln stopped it. Instead they hung 10 and this is the largest mass hanging in United States history, but no history book has it in it. Over and over treaties were broken, lands taken, and the Native Americans moved off ancestral lands.
