You are probably referring to photos of the 1946 underwater Crossroads Baker shot in the lagoon of Bikini atoll. Those ships were either facing directly towards or away surface zero. The water shock wave from the blast hit them head on and lifted them vertically to stand on end for a few moments. Many more ships were hit broadsides and some of them simply flipped over and sank. The vertical ships fell in random directions, probably most of them sank. There were also submerged submarines and disarmed naval mines in the lagoon, all were crushed in the blast and sank.

The vertical smoke trails next to the mushroom cloud in photos are smoke rocket trails, the rockets were launched a few seconds prior to detonation so they could measure the force and timing of the blast wave by how much the smoke trails were pushed aside. This data was used in calculating yield.
