They owned not a single armed merchantman and they had no meaningful amount of artillery, muskets, shells, shot or gunpowder.

Militias were not trained to a uniform standard, and no common standard existed. No manual of arms was available, there were few men qualified to serve at the highest levels of command. The Continental Army would have to be put together from top to bottom using on the job training.
