Julius Caesar was the first man who minted coins with his image on them. This was considered outrageous by republican Romans because it was something only a king would do. Subsequently, the Roman emperors also issued coins with their image on them.

Caesar started a personal religious cult based on the claim that his family descended from the goddess Venus Genitrix. No one had done something like this before. After his death he was deified. Later Augustus also created his own personal cult and deifying dead emperors became a tradition.

The senate bestowed many personal honours on Caesar. Among them was that of pater patriae (father of the motherland). This set another precedent which was subsequently taken up by the Roman emperors.
