Merchants, trades people and the poor. Often nuns and priests, anyone who wanted to escape religious changes they did not like, many were church related people - they wanted to start a new life that met with their beliefs.
Any time people come together from completely cultures and communicate it changes something in there mind about the person and the culture. The Silk Road would do that every day.

A pro would be that it assures that people have a rightful trial, a con would be that a criminal can delay his execution by appealing to a habeas corpus
My guess is that they took it out so it would look more appealing to casual people who would get confused if they saw the "wiki" part.
Rhyming poetry is just more appealing to the ear, and more people would want to listen to it.
