The Shoshone were spread over a very large area and different parts of the tribe lived in different ways, depending on the climate and available resources found locally.

Among the Western Shoshone (who were part of the Basin culture and generally had no horses), summer clothing for men was either absent completely (meaning they went naked) or was simply a breechclout of woven plant fibres, animal skin or fur. Women wore just a short apron of deerskin or woven fibres at the front, only occasionally adding another at the back. Women may also have worn a conical basket hat like those of the Paiute. Both sexes went barefoot for much of the year.

The Northern and Eastern Shoshone were much influenced by Plains culture and were rich in horses. Again the breechclout was worn by men in summer while women seem to have worn a wrap-around deerskin skirt leaving the upper body uncovered. Moccasins were more widely worn by these groups. Men went bareheaded but the women often wore a kind of sun hat made of twined willow.
