When reading the question theres a handful of countries that come to mind:
- U.S. vs Soviet Union;Although these two countries were allies during WW2 they became bitter enemies after the war, both countries emerged as the only 2 superpowers at the end of the war.Although they didnt fight an actual war, they were engaged in the Cold War for many years, both had nuclear weapons, and large military alliances. The US had/has NATO(including Canada and basically all of western & central Europe),while the Soviet Union had the Warsaw Pact countries(central and eastern European countries). The Soviet Union dissolved in 1991 so some people say the US won the Cold War.
- Pakistan vs India; These two countries have fought multiple wars against each other, both have nuclear weapons, and militaries that are strong enough to be considered "regional powers" They are neighbors and share a long border with a region (kashmir) which both countries claim belongs to them.Kashmir was the reason they went to war atleast twice.India's main religion is Buddhist,I believe, while Pakistan is Islamic.India has had terrorists attacks against it launched from Pakistan before so they face the same "war on terrorism" like the US is currently engaged in.
- India vs China; Today both countries are part of the "emerging powers" in the world, while China is the fastest growing economy,India's economy is also getting bigger. Both spend alot on their militaries and both are modernizing their armed forces as well.In the 1960's,China and India got into a border dispute in which their militaries became involved.Chinese troops made an incursion into Indian territory briefly, then withdrew. Both countries are suspicious of each other and with China now building a military base in Sri Lanka, which is in the Indian Ocean off the coast of India.
- Great Britain vs France; These two countries are allies nowdays, both NATO members. However, back in the colonial American days the two countries fought many battles at sea and on land in North America. The French helped Gen.George Washington and the American Army surround the British forcing them to surrender, the US then won its war of independence. The British and French had fought against each other before that,as well. Both were very influential countries with strong militaries. The British Empire use to be the strongest miltarily in the world in the 20th century.
- Greece vs Turkey; Both countries have fought,I believe, multiple wars against each other, over territory. Both lay claim to the many islands in the Mediterranian Sea.It seems these two countries might have a better relationship nowdays, they both joined the US-European military alliance-NATO,years ago so technically they are "allies" now.
- North Korea vs South Korea; These two countries use to be one country,Korea. The Japanese controlled Korea during WW2 and when the Japanese Empire was defeated by the US the Soviet Union already had troops in the northern part of the peninsula, while the US moved troops to secure the southern part of the peninsula.Since the Soviet Union was trying to spread their communist ideals and the US trying to spread their influence, both countries basically setup a "puppet gov't" on both sides of the 38th parallel.North Korea later invaded South Korea in an attempt to unite both countries under communist influence. The North received help from the Soviet Union and China, while the South was aided by the US and the United Nations. The war lasted 3 yrs(1950-1953) and neither side really won, although some may argue the North was trying to take over the south and failed at that main goal, while the south was trying to just stay independent so in those terms the south won.The US still has troops in South Korea today to help protect against any North Korean aggression. They still get into isolated naval battles from time to time when their navies meet in waters claimed by both countries, and also small border battles on land.North Korea is said to have nuclear weapons, while the south doesnt.
- Israel vs Arab countries(Syria,Iran, etc.) Israel became an independent nation in the late 1940's and since then have fought many battles against the militaries of Arab nations. The day after they became independent, the armies of Egypt,Jordan,Syria, etc. attacked Israel on 3 different sides, the Israelis fought them off and won the war.Israel is still being attacked today, but not by militaries of the Arab nations, but by terrorist organizations like Hezbollah,Hamas, etc.
There might be more that I missed, that's just off the top of my head.

Ireland is a neutral country and has no real enemies. In sporting terms, their main rivals would be England, although England would see other countries as being their greatest rivals.
Americans and Canadians are not rivals. It's just that some people dislike other countries because they don't understand them. They're really just good ol' neighbours.
it might lead to warfare because people will figh other countries for there resources
