The Ezell name, without veering too far from the current spelling, has been traced back to 1700 Scrooby in Nottinghamshire, England (UK). Unfortunately, this is where anyone trying to trace the name to it's roots hits what is called a "genealogical brick wall"! There is a lot of speculation, based on spelling variations, that the name has German or French origins. I have not personally seen enough evidence to convince me of any certain lineage beyond the known history. You can find much about the Ezell genealogy on various sites like ancestry.com and genforum.com. If you find some new leads, post it on these sites so that others can further their efforts.
