Mary Lyon felt the country hadn't done enough to educate women. At the time she began her activism, girls were only allowed to attend school in the summers. In her own case, she had sold woven blankets to pay for her education, and knew reforms were needed in that case as well. She opened schools that middle class women could afford to attend.
