Aung San Suu Kyi (1945- ) was placed under house arrest because she posed a threat to the military junta in Burma. Aung San Suu Kyi was in a position to be elected Prime Minister---and indeed, she was elected in 1990---and the government did not want her to have such a powerful position in the government because she promoted democracy.

Democracy would lessen the power of the military junta, and the military leaders did not want that. In spite of her house arrest, Aung San Suu Kyi won the 1990 election for Prime Minister. The military junta, however, did not recognize her victory and nullified the election results.

Aung San Suu Kyi has spent 14 of the last 20 years under house arrest, despite the international call for her release. Burmese officials have recently said Aung San Suu Kyi may be released to participate in the 2010 Burmese elections---she will not be allowed to run for office.

Aung San Suu Kyi has won many international awards for her non-violence approach and promotion of democracy. The Burmese government has offered her freedom if she was to leave the leave the country. She has refused the offer, furthering her support and continuing her fight against the military junta.
