When a storm cloud passed over Franklin's kite the negative charges in the cloud leaked onto his kite, his kite string, his key, and a Leyden jar attached to the key by a thin metal wire. Franklin however, was unaffected by the negative charges because he was holding a dry silk string which insulated him from the charges on the key. When Franklin reached out his knuckle to touch the key he received a shock, because the negative charges in the key were so strongly attracted to the positive charges in his body that a spark jumped from the key to his hand. Franklin's experiment successfully showed that lightning was actually static electricity.

Benjamin Franklin did not make the first kite. Kites were used in China 2,800 years ago. Kites made of silk and bamboo were the first type invented. Paper kites were invented in about 500 AD, about 1,200 years before Franklin was born. In 1750, Benjamin Franklin wrote a paper theorizing that one could prove lightning was electrical in nature by flying a kite dangling a metal object such as a key; he apparently (wisely) never tried the experiment. The first person documented to do Franklin's kite experiment was Thomas-François Dalibard of France in the year 1752.

It is believed that Ben flew the kite in the country side around Philadelphia. Other people say that he actually flew it at his friend's manor (Grouden Manor) in Bensalem, PA.
He found that lightning was simply another type of electricity, and thus could be handled like electricity. From this he developed the lightning rod.
Ben Franklin
The kite experiment was a scientific experiment
Oodles Answer: Twin-tailed kite
I found out that Ben Franklin NEVER did fly a kite
Ben Franklin was William Livingston's dad. William Livingston was there when his father,Ben Franklin, did the kite experiment, but he wasn't an inventor like his father.
