The Chinese Exclusion act passed in 1882 by President Chester A. Arthur was a direct result of nativism. It prevented Chinese laborers from immigrating.
The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 prevented Chinese people from becoming U.S. citizens for 10 years. The purpose was to prevent the United States from being "overrun" by enormous numbers of Chinese laborers willing to work for much lower wages than less recent immigrants.
It means "travelers to Gold Mountain." Gold Mountain, or "Gam Saan," was the name given to the western US (and Canadian) gold fields by Chinese laborers in the 1840s-1850s.
